Over the last few years, employees have abstained from workplace requirements or spoken out against their employers. On several occasions, they have claimed that their political beliefs do not allow them to fall in line with organisational policy. Some employers have taken action against their employees following those actions, and an emerging line of case law suggests that doing so is a form of discrimination on the basis of their protected beliefs.

Solicitors working in employment law, barristers trying to get into it, large employers, and universities (as employers).

All Levels – this can be picked up throughout anyone’s professional career, regardless of experience

Delegates will leave the session:

  • With an increased understanding of what protected belief discrimination is
  • An increased knowledge of the recent UK case law on what constitutes a protected political or philosophical belief
  • An improved ability to spot discrimination on the basis of protected belief in the workplace
  • With practical tools to stop protected belief discrimination before it happens
  • Political beliefs are protected in the same way that one’s race, sex or sexual orientation are.
  • Employees should receive training on political belief discrimination in the same way they would about racial discrimination.
  • Some organisational policies could be limiting the exercise of free speech in an unlawful manner, even when their stated aim is to keep trans people safe/deter sexism.
