An Introduction to Youth Sentencing

Sentencing for Youths is a distinct and quite complex area in criminal justice, with different sentences from adults, some only available in certain circumstances, and it’s important to understand the impact on sentencing of when a defendant becomes an adult. It’s always helpful to have an overview of this process.

We will also have a look at sentencing guidance and some cases to see how the legislation is applied in practice

So we are going to do three things, have an overview of youth sentencing, look at sentencing guidance, and look the sentencing guidelines, and look at some caselaw.

The key legislation includes the Sentencing Act 2020.
