Ask a Question

This presentation is about the charitable aspects of Muslim estate planning and it will expand on an article from the April 2023 issue of the Professional Advisor Bulletin by Remember a Charity entitled “Five things to know about Will-writing, Sharia-compliance, and Islamic Law”. With recent data showing an increase in the UK Muslim population of almost 2%, it is even more important than ever that professional advisors are equipped to offer their clients guidance that is informed and sensitive to their faith. Muslim clients are likely to seek Islamic Wills which are Sharia-compliant and there are specific charitable aspects to highlight to clients in order to ensure a fully informed decision can be made, this will include an opportunity to consider a wider range of wishes if the right questions are asked at the time of instruction taking. The presentation will explain the relevant terminology which Muslim clients will be familiar with and as a practitioner will mean greater support is available to improve statistics demonstrating that over 90% of British Muslim adults are without a valid Will in place.

Learning objectives:

  • The scope of the Muslim population and their needs
  • Understanding the context of Islamic Wills and Sharia-compliant Wills
  • Overview of the 5 pillars of the Muslim faith and relevance to charitable giving
  • Incorporating charitable wishes into the allowances for Islamic Inheritance
  • Practical resources to engage with the Muslim community
